Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BPR6EIX spark plug incorporates a central iridium electrode, a material that allows the generation of a highly precise and stable spark in each combustion cycle, even under the most demanding conditions of the nautical environment: saline humidity, constant vibrations and sudden load variations. It works at the heart of the ignition system, in direct coordination with the coil and the engine control module, being the element responsible for igniting the air-fuel mixture inside each cylinder. Iridium, harder and stronger than conventional nickel, reduces electrode wear and keeps the spark gap stable over longer hours of operation. When this component fails or degrades, the consequences manifest themselves in loss of power, poor starts, high fuel consumption and, in severe cases, damage to the ignition coil due to continuous overstress.

When to replace this part?

The most frequent signs that a marine spark plug has reached the limit of its useful life are jerks at idle, irregularities in acceleration, difficulty starting from cold and a perceptible increase in petrol consumption; Sometimes smoke emission with the smell of unburned fuel also appears. In engines for nautical use, it is recommended to check the condition of the spark plugs every 100 hours of navigation or at the beginning of each season, given that humidity and the saline environment accelerate the corrosion of the ceramic body and the ground electrode. Scheduling the change preventively, without waiting for symptoms to appear, is the most effective way to avoid an ignition failure far from the port and to preserve the integrity of the rest of the ignition system.
