Description

Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder of the outboard engine, being the final element of the ignition chain. It works in the engine's ignition system, supporting cycles of high voltage, pressure and temperature continuously during each combustion. A bad spark plug causes incomplete or irregular combustion, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and even inability to start. The NGK reference BMR4A is a spark plug designed for two-stroke outboard engines, where the reliability of the spark is decisive for the performance and durability of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the spark plug needs to be replaced include difficulty or resistance when starting cold, rough engine idling, jerking or loss of response to acceleration, and visible increase in fuel consumption. In two-stroke outboard engines, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal inspection and replace them preventively every 100 hours of navigation or once per season, whichever comes first. Renewing the spark plug during scheduled maintenance is one of the most economical interventions available, and avoids being stuck in the water due to a failure that could have easily been anticipated.
