Function and technical context
The NGK LFR4AE spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that initiates combustion in the cylinder of the outboard engine. It works within the ignition system, receiving high voltage current from the ignition module or coil and discharging it between its electrodes to ignite the air-fuel mixture at the exact moment. A spark plug in correct condition guarantees complete combustion, fuel efficiency and optimal power in each engine cycle. When it deteriorates, the ignition process becomes irregular, compromising the overall performance of the propellant and potentially leading to secondary damage to other components of the system.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or defective spark plug are: difficult starting or no starting, jerks and loss of power at medium or high speed, increased fuel consumption, irregular vibrations at idle and the presence of black smoke or the smell of unburned fuel in the exhaust gases. On outboard engines, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal maintenance and replace them preventively every 100 hours of operation or at least once a year, whichever comes first. Replacing the spark plug preventively is one of the lowest cost interventions available and avoids water breakdowns that can be much more expensive to resolve.
