Function and technical context

The crankshaft is the fundamental component of the engine that transforms the reciprocating movement of the pistons into rotary movement, transmitting the power developed in the combustion chamber to the propeller. It works integrated into the power transmission system, simultaneously activating the distribution, cooling and lubrication mechanisms through the movement of its crankpins and counterweights. Wear or breakage of the crankshaft causes total loss of power, severe engine vibrations and inability to start, compromising navigation safety.

When to replace this part?

The crankshaft requires replacement when symptoms such as abnormal vibrations in the engine, irregular metallic noises coming from the block, loss of unequal compression between cylinders or complete inability to start after checking other systems are detected. Although it is a long-lasting part that does not follow a fixed preventive maintenance interval, it is advisable to inspect it during each seasonal inspection if the engine presents abnormal behavior. Replacing this part at the first symptoms prevents cascading damage to connecting rods, blocks and cylinders, which result in extremely expensive repairs.
