Function and technical context

The piston is the fundamental moving component in the engine's combustion chamber, responsible for converting the thermal energy generated by the explosion of fuel into mechanical motion that propels the vessel. It works in the cylinder-connecting rod-crankshaft system, performing an reciprocating movement of compression and expansion that transmits power to the propeller shaft. A piston in poor condition causes loss of compression, excessive fuel consumption, drastic reduction in power and, in severe cases, water entering the crankcase and irreversible engine damage.

When to replace this part?

The pistons show premature wear when the engine progressively loses power, generates bluish smoke in the exhaust or when low cylinder compression is detected during a maintenance check. Although there is no fixed time interval, inspection of the condition of pistons is recommended every 500-800 hours of operation in boats with intense use, especially in salt waters where corrosion accelerates wear. Preventatively replacing the piston kit before failure occurs avoids much more expensive repairs resulting from damage to the cylinder walls or crankshaft.
