Function and technical context

The engine base gasket is a critical sealing component that seals the connection between the engine block and the mounting base in marine propulsion systems. This sealing prevents leaks of coolant, oil and seawater to the outside of the engine, maintaining the structural integrity of the lubrication and cooling system. Its degradation or breakage compromises the hermeticity of the engine, allowing infiltrations that can cause internal corrosion, localized overheating and loss of propulsion performance. It is especially critical in two-stroke outboard engines, where the pressure in the systems is constant during navigation.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of engine base gasket failure include visible fluid leaks under the engine, oil or coolant stains on the transom, or the appearance of an oily film around the engine. It is recommended to check the condition of the gasket during each seasonal maintenance, especially before summer sailing, and replace it preventively if swelling, hardening, cracks or discoloration are detected. Replacing it preventively avoids costly offshore repairs and prevents secondary damage to adjacent components.
