Function and technical context
Piston rings are critical components of the cylinder-piston system that generate dynamic sealing between the piston and cylinder walls during all engine strokes. Its main function is to retain the compression of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber and, simultaneously, prevent combustion gases from escaping into the engine crankcase. Poor sealing causes loss of compression, crankcase gas entry, lubricating oil contamination and accelerated degradation of marine engine performance.
When to replace this part?
Symptoms of advanced ring wear include noticeable loss of power, bluish smoke from the exhaust (indicative of oil burning), increased fuel and oil consumption, and difficulty starting the engine. It is recommended to check the condition of the hoops at each seasonal maintenance, especially after prolonged periods of intensive navigation or in water with sediment. Preventive replacement of the ring kit prevents costly secondary damage to the cylinder walls and ensures the longevity of the engine block.
