In high-power Mercury engines such as the 300 and 350 models, the correct operation of the platinum ensures consistent ignition at all revolutions, directly affecting the power developed, fuel economy and overall reliability of marine propulsion. A worn or defective platinum prevents the engine from reaching its rated power and can cause intermittent misfires that are especially problematic in offshore navigation.

Characteristic symptoms of platinum wear include difficulty starting the engine, rough running at low rpm, progressive loss of power, and misfires that worsen under acceleration.
