Description
Function and technical context
The aluminum anode is a cathodic protection component that prevents galvanic corrosion in medium power Mercury and Tohatsu outboard motors. Installed in the stern and transmission area, this anode acts by sacrificing itself to the salinity and electrolytes of seawater, thus protecting critical metal parts of the engine such as the gearbox and submerged components. Its function is essential in saltwater vessels, where electrochemical corrosion can quickly compromise the structural integrity and operation of the transmission system.
When to replace this part?
The aluminum anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when visible corrosion or material loss greater than 50% occurs. Annual preventative replacement is the recommended practice in saltwater, especially if boating frequently, as a depleted anode allows corrosion to directly attack the gearbox and other expensive components. Changing the anode preventively is a minimal investment that avoids serious transmission repairs in adverse navigation conditions.
