The sacrificial anode is a critical component in Mercury Verado and MerCruiser marine engine cooling systems. Its main function is to protect the noble metals of the engine against galvanic corrosion through a controlled electrochemical reaction: the anode preferentially oxidizes, preventing iron, copper and alloys in the cooling system from corroding. In saltwater applications, where electrical conductivity exponentially accelerates corrosive processes, this anode acts as a defensive barrier in internal and external circuits. Without its active presence, pitting corrosion would compromise the integrity of cooling passages, gaskets and vital components, leading to leaks, engine overheating and, in extreme cases, irreversible damage.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes are gradually consumed with operating time and water salinity; It is common for them to show visible erosion after a season of intensive navigation, especially in salt water. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at each seasonal maintenance check and replace it when it has lost between 50-70% of its volume or presents advanced corrosion. Preventive replacement is essential to avoid costly repairs: a depleted anode exposes the engine to breakdowns that can affect the sale of the boat or cause navigation failures.
