The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the Mercury Verado engine corrosion protection system. Installed in refrigeration circuits, it acts as an electrochemical defense barrier against galvanic corrosion generated by contact of metal with salt or brackish water. By oxidizing preferentially in front of the vital engine parts (cylinder head, block, pipes), the anode absorbs electrochemical aggression and prolongs the useful life of the cooling system. Without this active protection, internal components suffer accelerated corrosion, triggering blockages, coolant leaks, and engine overheating.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected and replaced at the end of each boating season, especially in salt waters where corrosion is more aggressive. If you observe visible erosion, loss of material or whitish deposits on the anode, it is an indication that its protective capacity has been exhausted and requires immediate replacement. Keeping the anode in good condition is a fundamental preventive measure: replacing it routinely avoids costly repairs to the engine block and guarantees the reliability of the cooling system in any navigation conditions.
