Description
Function and technical context
The 80606M membrane is the regulating component of the fuel supply system on Mercury, Mariner and Mercruiser outboard engines. It operates through a pressure-vacuum mechanism that controls the flow of petrol from the tank to the carburetor, maintaining a constant pressure regardless of navigation conditions. This membrane is essential to guarantee a precise air-fuel mixture: its failure causes over-enrichment or impoverishment of the mixture, loss of power, difficult starts and, in extreme cases, complete stoppage of the engine during navigation.
When to replace this part?
Carburetor membranes show clear signs of aging: loss of elasticity, microscopic cracks, discoloration and fragility to the touch. They usually require replacement after 5-8 seasons of intense use or when fuel supply failures are detected without apparent cause in other components. It is recommended to visually inspect the membrane every year and replace it preventively together with the fuel filter during spring maintenance; This action prevents emergency repairs at sea and significantly extends the life of the carburetor.
