The condenser is an essential component of the ignition system in Mercury 500 series engines. Its function is to store and release electrical energy in a controlled manner to optimize the spark gap in the spark plugs, guaranteeing precise and efficient ignition of the fuel in each engine cycle. It works in close coordination with the distributor and the ignition coil, forming part of the low voltage circuit that regulates the entire combustion sequence. A condenser in poor condition causes loss of power, difficult starts, irregular acceleration and can accelerate the wear of the distributor and the platinum contacts, seriously affecting the overall performance of the boat.

When to replace this part?

Capacitors usually show failure symptoms such as weak sparks, an engine that does not start correctly even with a battery in good condition, or irregular ignition at different revolutions. Although there is no fixed interval of engine hours for replacement, it is advisable to check its continuity and capacity during each seasonal maintenance, especially on boats with intensive use or after prolonged periods of storage. Replacing the condenser preventatively during annual maintenance prevents emergency repairs at sea and prolongs the life of the entire ignition system.
