Function and technical context

The impeller is the central component of the engine cooling pump, responsible for drawing in water from the inlet and circulating it under pressure through the block's liner passages. This flexible rubber element dissipates the heat generated during combustion, maintaining the temperature within safe operating parameters. Its operation is critical to prevent overheating, the consequences of which include irreversible damage to cylinders, head gaskets and valves, as well as progressive loss of power during navigation.

When to replace this part?

Elastomer impellers wear out due to natural erosion and hardening of the material, a process accelerated in salt water or sediment. The most obvious symptoms are a decrease in the cooling water flow, an abnormal rise in engine temperature, and hardness or fragility noticeable in the vanes during visual inspection. It is recommended to check and replace preventively every 300 to 400 hours of navigation, or at least once a season if that interval is not reached; Impeller failure during operation can cause instantaneous overheating with no opportunity for controlled shutdown.
