The impeller cover is part of the outboard motor's water cooling system, acting as the upper seal for the water pump chamber. Its function is to contain and guide the flow of water that the impeller generates towards the engine cooling ducts, guaranteeing that the internal pressure is maintained and the flow correctly reaches the cooling points. Without a cover in good condition, the cooling circuit loses tightness: the water circulates poorly or stops circulating, which causes the engine to overheat within a few minutes of navigation. In small displacement engines such as Suzuki's DT4, DT5 and J4, where thermal margins are tight, any failure in this component can lead to irreversible internal damage.

When to replace this part?

The most common sign that the impeller cover is damaged is the loss of the cooling water jet through the engine nozzle or its notable reduction, sometimes accompanied by a temperature alarm. When disassembling the water pump unit - a recommended operation every 300-400 hours of operation or at least once per boating season - it is advisable to inspect the cover next to the impeller: cracks, deformations or erosion on the contact surface are grounds for immediate replacement. Changing the cover preventively every time the impeller is renewed is a common practice among naval mechanics that prevents breakdowns due to overheating in areas without nearby technical assistance.
