The impeller cover is part of the outboard's water cooling system, acting as a seal for the water pump chamber that houses the rubber impeller. Its function is to contain and direct the flow of water captured by the impeller towards the engine cooling ducts, guaranteeing the hydraulic pressure necessary for the liquid to circulate correctly throughout the system. A cover in poor condition – cracked, deformed or with deteriorated gaskets – causes internal pressure losses that drastically reduce the cooling flow rate, which can lead to overheating of the engine, damage to the cylinder head and serious damage to the engine block. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged water pump cover are the absence or reduction of the cooling water jet (the "pililo"), signs of overheating on the temperature gauge and water leak marks in the area of the lower drive unit. It is recommended to check and inspect this cover every time the impeller is serviced—usually every 2 seasons or between 300 and 400 hours of navigation—since both components work together. Replacing the cover preventively when renewing the impeller avoids having to disassemble the lower unit again in the middle of the season, saving time and labor costs.
