Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes for fast boat hulls act as electrochemical shields that protect submerged metal surfaces from galvanic corrosion, a particularly aggressive phenomenon in boats operating at high speed and in salt or brackish water environments. This zinc anode with dimensions 210x70x25 mm is designed to be fixed directly on the hull, interposing its active metallic mass between the water and the noble components of the boat -propellers, shafts, rudders and stainless steel or bronze parts. Being a metal with a lower electrochemical potential, zinc preferentially oxidizes, preserving the structural integrity of the rest of the immersed metallic elements. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion progresses silently and can seriously compromise the hull, appendages and propulsion systems within a few sailing seasons.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has completed its useful cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume it must be replaced without delay, since its protective capacity decreases drastically before its total consumption. On boats that are used intensively or that remain in the water all season, it is recommended to check the condition of the hull anodes at least twice a year and replace them at each annual docking as a standard preventive measure. Replacing the anode at the beginning of each sailing season is the practice most recommended by naval technicians to ensure continuous cathodic protection and avoid costly damage to the vessel's hull.
