Description

Function and technical context

Fish-shaped sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed directly on the hull of the boat, acting as a sacrificial galvanic pole against electrolytic corrosion. Its function is to attract the galvanic currents present in salt or brackish water, so that it is the anode itself that oxidizes and consumes itself instead of the structural metal parts of the hull, propellers, shafts or rudders. This protection mechanism is critical on any vessel exposed to marine environments, as galvanic corrosion can silently and rapidly degrade vital metal components. Without adequate cathodic protection, the bronze, aluminum or stainless steel surfaces of the hull and steering appendages are exposed to irreversible deterioration that compromises both the structural integrity and seaworthiness of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that a helmet anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed 50% to 60% of its volume, it has ceased to offer effective protection and should be replaced immediately. The standard professional recommendation is to inspect and renew the hull anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching for cleaning and painting the bottom, although in areas with high water conductivity or with vessels exposed to electrical leakage currents, a semiannual replacement may be necessary. Changing the anodes preventively at each grounding is the most economical and effective measure to avoid costly repairs to shafts, propellers or rudders caused by advanced galvanic corrosion.
