The anode to hang with cable is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed on boats using a submerged cable, protecting the hull, propeller, shafts and other submerged metal elements against galvanic corrosion. This type of anode acts as a sacrificial metal: being electrochemically more active than the stainless steel, aluminum or bronze of the noble parts of the boat, it preferentially corrodes in its place. Its cable fixing system allows it to be placed in hard-to-reach areas or used as an additional protective anode hanging under the hull, being especially useful on anchored vessels or in ports with high electrolytic activity. Without adequate cathodic protection, submerged metal components suffer accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the vessel.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their protection capacity decreases drastically. The symptoms of a depleted or absent anode are easily identifiable: pitting on propellers, shafts or horns, greenish or whitish discoloration on submerged metal surfaces and, in advanced cases, perforation of bronze or aluminum elements. The professional recommendation is to replace all the boat's anodes at the beginning of each nautical season preventively, without waiting for them to be completely consumed, which avoids costly interventions in the dock or serious navigation breakdowns.
