Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the central element of the cathodic protection system of any vessel: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the hull, propeller, shaft and submerged accessories against electrochemical attack caused by galvanic corrosion. This oval zinc anode acts as a negative active electrode, attracting the galvanic current to itself and thus preserving the noblest metals of the boat - bronze, stainless steel, aluminum - which would otherwise suffer progressive and irreversible degradation. Its correct installation in the hull is especially critical in salt or mixed water environments, where the conductivity of the electrolyte accelerates galvanic corrosion processes. Without adequate cathodic protection, structures such as the sternpost, centerboard anodes or thru-hulls can deteriorate at high speed, compromising the safety and structural integrity of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious warning sign is the reduction of the anode volume by more than 50%: when the zinc has consumed more than half of its mass, it has lost real protective capacity and must be replaced before galvanic corrosion begins to attack the structural components. It is recommended to inspect the hull anodes at least once a season - ideally at the annual beaching - and replace them whenever they show greater wear than mentioned, regardless of the time elapsed, since the aggressiveness of the water varies depending on the port and the navigation area. Anticipating the complete replacement of the anode at the beginning of each season is the most common practice among nautical maintenance professionals: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing a propeller shaft or a hull damaged by corrosion.
