Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the central element of cathodic protection on boats, acting as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion that affects submerged metal parts. This GDF anode with dimensions 190x54x24 mm works in the protection system of the hull and the metal components of the propulsion group, attracting to itself the electrolytic currents that would otherwise attack propellers, shafts, leg anodes or outboard and stationary motor casings. Its correct installation guarantees that the noble parts of the propeller - aluminum, bronze or stainless steel - are protected from the marine environment, both in salt water and in fresh water with a high mineral content. Without active, well-maintained cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can degrade critical components in a single boating season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that a sacrificial anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it has reached the limit of its useful life and its protective capacity is compromised. The usual maintenance guideline for anodes is to check them at the beginning of each season and replace them annually at least, although in areas of high electrolyte activity or waters with high salinity it may be necessary to replace them more frequently. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical investment to avoid severe damage to propellers, shafts and casings that involve much higher cost repairs.
