Description

Function and technical context

This boiler anode with dimensions 300x150x30 mm is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed in boilers and hot water systems on board ships. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal: by oxidizing in a controlled manner, it protects the metal surfaces of the boiler—generally made of steel or copper alloys—against galvanic corrosion caused by the marine environment. Without adequate cathodic protection, the walls and internal connections of the marine boiler suffer accelerated corrosion, which can lead to leaks, loss of thermal efficiency and even serious breakdowns of the vessel's domestic hot water system.

When to replace this anode?

The most obvious symptom that the boiler anode is exhausted is the appearance of signs of reddish corrosion or pitting on the internal metal components of the boiler, or checking that the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass upon inspection. Boiler anodes should be checked at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced at least once a year, or sooner if wear is visible; in especially saline waters or waters with high conductivity, the interval may be shortened. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of the season is the most economical measure to avoid replacing the entire boiler due to internal corrosion.
