Description

Function and technical context

This boiler anode with dimensions 300x150x10 mm is part of the cathodic protection system for heat exchangers and water boilers in marine installations. Its function is to act as a sacrificial electrode, attracting electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the exchanger or boiler, thus preserving the structural integrity of the equipment. In salt or brackish water environments, the aggressiveness of the electrolytic medium is especially high, so the presence of this type of anode is essential to keep the cooling and heating circuits on board operational. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can perforate the walls of the exchanger, cause leaks in the cooling circuit and compromise the operation of the engine or the auxiliary system it serves.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each boating season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, since from that point on their protective capacity is drastically reduced. Symptoms of a depleted anode in a boiler or exchanger include the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the copper, brass or aluminum surfaces of the equipment, as well as possible leaks at the gaskets or in the body of the exchanger itself. Preventive replacement is recommended at least once a season; Renewing the anode during each annual maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid serious breakdowns and costly repairs to boilers or exchangers while sailing.
