Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes for outboard or inboard motors act as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion, protecting critical metal parts of the propeller—such as the tailshaft, propeller, engine casing, and aluminum surfaces—when the boat is moored or underway in salt, brackish, or fresh water. This zinc anode, with a 2'' x 1/2'' thread (reference CME1), is installed directly on the block or in the engine cooling area, acting as a sacrificial electrode: being a more electrochemically active metal, it corrodes first, preserving the structural parts of the drive assembly. Without cathodic protection in good condition, corrosion silently attacks the most vulnerable areas of the marine engine, potentially causing accelerated deterioration of the casing, cooling water leaks or irreversible damage to the shaft and transmission that leads to high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost more than 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season—or every time the boat is taken out of the water for stranding—and replace it preventively at the beginning of each nautical campaign if it shows notable wear or irregular deformations. Replacing the anode before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid serious galvanic damage to much higher value components such as the shaft, propeller or engine block.
