1-1/2 x 5/8 MOTOR ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the central element of the cathodic protection system in outboard and stationary marine engines: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the most valuable metal parts of the engine – aluminum or steel casings, shafts, propellers and blocks – against galvanic corrosion caused by electrolysis in salt or brackish water. This engine anode, with dimensions 1-1/2" x 5/8" and reference CME2S, is installed directly on the engine block or casing, acting as an active metal that preferentially degrades instead of the structural components of the propeller. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can seriously compromise the mechanical integrity of the engine in a single boating season.
When to replace this part?
The clearest indicator that an anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when pronounced wear, an uneven surface is observed, or the metal core is exposed, the anode has stopped effectively protecting the motor. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anodes at least once a season or every time the boat leaves the water for inspection, since in waters with high conductivity consumption can be very rapid. Changing the anode preventively before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost components such as axles or engine housings.
