Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the engine and the boat against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in marine environments. It acts as a sacrificial element: being a less noble metal (usually zinc, aluminum or magnesium), it attracts electrochemical corrosion and degrades instead of the structural parts of the engine or hull. In Lombardini engines installed on boats, the anode protects critical metal components such as the block, propeller or drive shaft, preventing pitting and premature deterioration of the base metal. Without proper cathodic protection, parts exposed to salt or brackish water can suffer irreversible damage within a few weeks of sailing.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, its protective capacity is compromised and it must be replaced immediately. The anode check should be carried out at least once a season, and more frequently if the boat remains moored in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water or with stray currents. Replacing the TEN02351 anode preventively at the beginning or end of each nautical season is the practice recommended by specialized workshops to avoid costly repairs to the metal structure of the engine.
