Description

Function and technical context

The plate anode for Hamilton motors is a cathodic protection element that is installed directly on the motor plate or in structural areas exposed to water. Its mission is to act as a sacrificial metal, attracting galvanic and electrolytic corrosion to itself to protect the noblest metal components of the powertrain: aluminum casings, axles, impellers and pump bodies. In salt or brackish water installations, where electrochemical activity is especially aggressive, an anode in good condition is the first line of defense against structural corrosion. If the anode is completely used up without being replaced, the base metals of the motor are exposed and irreversible deterioration begins that can affect the tightness and mechanical integrity of the assembly.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptoms that the plate anode has reached the limit of its useful life are: residual mass less than 50% of the initial volume, completely blackened or disintegrated surface, or appearance of pits and superficial corrosion on the adjacent metal parts of the motor plate. The general recommendation for anodes in marine engines is to inspect them at the beginning and end of each season, and replace them when their wear exceeds 50%, or at least once a year in saltwater areas. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to high-cost components such as housings, covers or closing plates of the Hamilton engine.
