Description

Function and technical context

The fuel pump is the component responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the carburetor or injection system of the outboard motor, guaranteeing a constant and stable flow in all navigation conditions. It works within the fuel supply system, being the critical link between the tank and the air-fuel mixture that determines engine performance. This unit acts as a combined vapor separator and fuel pump, preventing vapor bubbles generated by engine heat from disrupting the flow of petrol to the cylinders. A failure in this component causes progressive loss of power, unexpected engine stops or difficult starts, especially dangerous situations in offshore navigation. It directly replaces OMC references 5004428, 5000800, 5000801, 0439347, 0439712, 0769280, 439347 and 439712, being compatible with 4 and 6-cylinder engines with a cylinder diameter of 3,600 inches manufactured between 1998 and 2006.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a defective fuel pump in outboard engines include: unstable idle or engine cuts at full load, difficulty maintaining cruising speed, repeated cold starts with the need to pump the manual pump excessively, and in advanced cases, sudden engine stoppage due to lack of power. It is recommended to inspect the fuel pump during each seasonal maintenance (approximately every 100-150 hours of navigation) and replace it preventively if there is any sign of hardening of the membranes, fuel leaks or reduced flow. Replacing this component before it completely fails avoids breakdowns at sea and the high costs of afloat assistance.
