Description

Function and technical context

The fuel solenoid valve is an electromechanical component located in the power circuit of the outboard or inboard motor that regulates the flow of fuel using a 12V electrical signal. Its mission is to open or close the fuel flow precisely based on the orders of the engine control system, guaranteeing that the fuel reaches the carburetor or injection rail at the correct time and quantity. The connection diameter of 8 to 10 mm makes it compatible with standard hoses for low-pressure circuits common in marine petrol engines. If this valve fails in the closed position, the engine does not start or stops suddenly due to lack of fuel; If it fails in the open position or with internal leaks, excessive enrichment of the mixture, difficulty in stopping the engine and even risk of fire on board may occur.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a defective fuel solenoid valve are: the engine does not start despite having enough fuel in the tank, intermittent engine cuts at full load, a persistent smell of petrol in the engine compartment due to internal dripping, or difficulty turning off the engine when the ignition is turned off. As it is a component subject to vibrations, humidity and continuous opening and closing cycles, it is advisable to inspect it during each seasonal maintenance and measure its coil resistance with a multimeter to detect open or shorted windings. Replacing it preventively at the first symptom avoids being left without propulsion at sea and prevents fire risks associated with fuel leaks.
