The head gasket is the critical sealing component that seals the joint between the engine block and the cylinder head on Yamaha outboard engines. This part works in the combustion system, subjected to extreme pressures and temperatures derived from the controlled explosion of the air-fuel mixture. Its main function is to maintain airtightness between the combustion chambers and the cooling and lubrication ducts, preventing exhaust gas leaks, entry of coolant into the crankcase and loss of compression pressure. A failure in this gasket compromises the integrity of the engine, causing localized overheating, loss of power and entry of water into internal circuits.

Symptoms of head gasket wear include abnormal overheating of the engine, a noticeable decrease in compression, the presence of water or coolant in the engine oil (appearance of emulsion), and the emission of persistent white smoke from the exhaust. The replacement interval depends on the use and maintenance of the engine, although in highly demanding engines or with a history of overheating it is advisable to check their condition during each seasonal maintenance.
