The forward pinion is part of the drive train of the tail unit in Suzuki outboard engines, integrating into the gearbox to channel the engine torque from the vertical shaft to the propeller during forward travel. Within the lower unit pinion set, this component works in constant contact with the bevel pinion and the propeller shaft, so its toothed geometry must be kept in perfect condition to guarantee the transfer of force without play or loss of torque. A failure in this pinion directly compromises the forward propulsion capacity, potentially leaving the boat without steering in demanding navigation situations.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of deterioration in the forward sprocket are metallic rattling or grinding noises when selecting forward gear, unusual vibration transmitted through the engine tail, or loss of thrust with transmission slipping despite the engine accelerating normally. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the tail box sprockets at each seasonal maintenance or whenever the lower unit is disassembled for any intervention, such as changing the impeller or tail oil. Acting preventively at the first sign of tooth wear prevents a major breakdown in the drive train that could render the boat unusable far from port.
