Function and technical context

The exhaust gasket is a critical component of the combustion gas evacuation system on Yamaha and Mercury outboard engines. This piece hermetically seals the connection between the exhaust manifold and the engine casing, preventing gas leaks at high temperature and pressure. Its function is essential to maintain engine efficiency, avoid power losses and prevent the entry of seawater into areas where it should not circulate. A poor seal in this joint compromises both the performance and durability of adjacent components, and can cause accelerated corrosion and chain failures of the exhaust system.

When to replace this part?

Exhaust gaskets show progressive wear due to continuous exposure to high temperatures and thermal expansion-contraction cycles. The most obvious symptoms include loss of engine power, abnormal noises in the exhaust area, unusual vibrations and, in advanced cases, water entering the engine casing. It is recommended that this gasket be inspected during each seasonal maintenance and replaced preventively every 5-7 years or after 1000-1500 hours of operation, especially on saltwater vessels where corrosion accelerates deterioration. Replacing the gasket preventively is significantly cheaper than repairing damage caused by a prolonged leak.
