Function and Technical Context
The engine gasket kit includes all the sealing elements necessary to seal the joints between the various parts of the cylinder block and the cylinder head, ensuring that fluids—coolant, oil, and fuel mixture—flow exclusively through the designated passages. In 10- and 15-hp outboard engines, such as those covered by this kit, the gaskets work simultaneously in the lubrication, water cooling, and fuel supply systems; therefore, their integrity is critical to the proper functioning of the entire assembly. Deterioration of any of these gaskets can cause water to enter the crankcase, loss of compression, mixing of oil with coolant, or leakage of combustion gases—damage that compromises the engine’s service life and the safety of the boat. This kit includes the sealing gaskets for Johnson and Evinrude engines listed under part numbers 394546 and 802113, and is also compatible with Mercury/Mariner/Mercruiser part number 802113 and OMC part number 0394546.
When should this part be replaced?
The most common symptoms of deteriorated engine gaskets in outboard motors are: white or bluish smoke from the exhaust, progressive loss of power, overheating with no apparent cause in the cooling system, the presence of oil in the coolant, or bubbling in the expansion tank. It is recommended to check the condition of the gaskets every time the cylinder head is removed or during major repairs, as well as during pre-season and post-season maintenance, especially in engines that have experienced occasional overheating. Replacing the complete gasket kit as a preventive measure during any major engine overhaul prevents serious breakdowns while underway and significantly reduces the total cost of repair.
