Function and technical context

This plug anode acts as a sacrificial element in the cathodic protection system of marine engines, inserting itself in strategic points of the block or casing where galvanic corrosion represents a direct risk for structural metal components. Its function is to oxidize in a controlled manner rather than allowing electrochemical attack to affect critical surfaces such as the engine block, heat exchanger or transmission case. Cathodic protection is especially relevant in salty or brackish waters, where the conductivity of the medium accelerates galvanic corrosion processes between metals of different electrochemical potential. A depleted or missing anode leaves these components exposed to irreversible deterioration that can lead to costly breakdowns and the immobilization of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Plug anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately half their mass or show uniform visible erosion on their surface. If, upon removing the cap, the metal core is exposed, the anode no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. Preventative replacement each season is the recommended practice by marine maintenance shops, as the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing a corroded block or casing.
