Description

Function and technical context

The drain with a screw plug is part of the hull emptying system, acting as a watertight seal on 34 mm diameter thru-hulls. Its mission is to allow the controlled drainage of the water accumulated inside the boat when it is taken ashore, as well as to guarantee hermetic sealing during navigation to prevent water from entering the hull. The combination of AISI 316 stainless steel with rubber gasket ensures superior resistance to marine corrosion, both in salt water and fresh water, unlike models made of brass or plastic that present greater degradation over time. A bad or poorly adjusted drain plug can compromise the buoyancy of the boat and cause uncontrolled water ingress, especially during mooring or dry transport.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the drain plug needs to be replaced are: difficulty in screwing or unscrewing the plug, visible deformation or hardening of the rubber gasket causing leaks when closing, signs of surface rust or pitting on the steel body, and excessive play within the thru-hull preventing tight sealing. It is recommended to inspect this component at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the rubber and the integrity of the threading. Replacing the plug preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is a low-cost measure that avoids risk situations in port or on the high seas.
