Function and technical context

The piston and liner assembly forms the core of the power unit in the Volvo Penta TAMD series marine diesel engines, being directly responsible for the compression of the air-fuel mixture and the transmission of the combustion force to the crankshaft. The cylindrical jacket acts as a guide and controlled friction surface for the piston, containing the pressures generated in each combustion cycle and isolating the gases from the cooling and lubrication circuit chamber. The wear of any of these two components compromises the sealing of the chamber, causing loss of compression, excessive oil consumption, abnormal emissions and a progressive decrease in the performance of the propellant. As it is a complete kit, it allows the interior geometry of the cylinder to be restored with precise manufacturing tolerances, guaranteeing the necessary sealing to recover the engine's performance.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of wear on pistons and liners include bluish smoke from the exhaust - an unmistakable sign of oil combustion -, notable loss of compression measured by a compression meter, cold metallic knocking inside the engine block and abnormal consumption of lubricant between changes. In intensive use marine diesel engines such as TAMD63L-A and TAMD63P-A, inspection of the cylinder-piston group is recommended after 3,000 hours of operation or in the event of any of the symptoms described. Preventively replacing the complete kit during a planned inspection at the dock avoids serious navigational breakdowns and considerably reduces the total cost of the repair.
