Function and technical context
The 10 micron Racor filter acts as a barrier to separate and retain solid particles, emulsified water and contaminants present in the diesel before the fuel reaches the injection pump and injectors of the marine diesel engine. Working within the fuel supply system, it intercepts impurities of up to 10 microns that, if not eliminated, would cause premature wear due to abrasion in the precision elements of the injection train. Its high filtering capacity makes it especially suitable for engines for professional and intensive use, such as those of the Volvo Penta D11, D13, D16 and D8 series, where operational continuity and protection of the injection system are critical. The presence of free water in the diesel is one of the main factors of internal corrosion in the injectors, and this filter, available in blue for easy identification, contributes decisively to maintaining the integrity of the fuel throughout the operation.
When to replace this part?
The most common signs that indicate that the Racor fuel filter must be replaced are: difficult starting of the engine, progressive loss of power at full load, irregularities in the rotation speed or sudden shutdowns due to lack of diesel flow. As a general rule in marine diesel engines, it is recommended to replace the filter element every 200-250 hours of operation or at least once per season, especially if operating in port areas where fuel quality is variable. Replacing the filter preventively before a long voyage or at the beginning of the nautical season avoids costly breakdowns in the injection system that could leave the boat immobilized at sea.
