Function and technical context

The vacuum gauge is a measuring instrument installed in the supply or intake system of the marine engine, whose function is to indicate the level of vacuum or depression existing in the fuel line or in the intake manifold. It works directly on the aspiration circuit, allowing the mechanic or boss to detect restrictions in filters, clogged pipes or problems in the fuel pump before they cause a major breakdown. A vacuum gauge in poor condition or out of calibration prevents correct reading of the depression values, which can lead to starting failures, engine outages while sailing or damage due to cavitation in the pump. Its correct reading is key for preventive diagnosis and efficient maintenance of any outboard or inboard engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the vacuum gauge needs to be checked or replaced are: erratic or fixed reading at zero even with the engine running, fogged or cracked gauge glass, and visible pressure losses in the connections. It is recommended to inspect the vacuum gauge during each seasonal maintenance and replace it if there is any sign of an incorrect reading, since a faulty instrument can mask real problems in the fuel or intake circuit. Replacing it preventively is much cheaper than facing an engine shutdown at sea due to an erroneous diagnosis.
