Description
Function and technical context
The head gasket is the critical sealing element that seals the joint between the engine block and the cylinder head in Yamaha outboard engines. This piece works in the combustion chamber sealing system, supporting the pressures generated during the explosion of the fuel and preventing leaks of gases, coolant and lubricating oil to the outside. Its degradation due to thermal cycles or erosion allows salt water to enter the interior of the engine, which causes accelerated corrosion, loss of compression and failure to start in demanding navigation conditions.
When to replace this part?
Symptoms of head gasket wear include gradual loss of compression, visible coolant or oil leaks around the joint line between the head and block, and difficulty maintaining stable operating temperature. Although there is no fixed range in operating hours, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the gasket during each seasonal inspection, especially after prolonged winters or periods of non-use. Replacing this part preventively avoids complete engine repairs and the risk of breakdown in open water.
