Function and technical context

The head gasket is the sealing element located between the engine block and the cylinder head, responsible for sealing the cylinders, cooling passages and oil channels in the outboard motor assembly. It works within the combustion and cooling system simultaneously, supporting the high pressures generated during the work cycle of the V4 engine. If this gasket deteriorates or loses its tightness, the engine can mix coolant with oil, lose compression in one or more cylinders or allow seawater to enter the interior of the block, which results in severe and irreversible damage to the engine assembly. Its correct condition is, therefore, essential to guarantee the mechanical integrity of the Suzuki outboard drive.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad head gasket are: white or bluish smoke from the exhaust, loss of compression detected in cylinder tests, presence of bubbles in the coolant tank or water emulsion in the engine oil. It is recommended to inspect the head gasket whenever the head is removed for any reason, as well as any episode of engine overheating, since thermal shock is the main cause of deformation and failure in this component. Replacing the head gasket preventively after overheating or when detecting the first symptoms prevents major breakdowns that can render the engine unusable while sailing.
