The port head gasket is a critical sealing element that seals the joint between the head and engine block on the left bank of high-power Suzuki outboard engines. It works within the combustion system, ensuring that the gases generated in the cylinders do not escape into the cooling circuit or outside, and that the coolant does not enter the combustion chambers. Its integrity is essential to maintain the correct compression in each cylinder, the thermal efficiency of the engine and the reliability of the assembly. A failure in this gasket can lead to fluid mixing, severe loss of compression, overheating of the propeller and structural damage to the cylinder head or block, with direct consequences on the seaworthiness of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration of a head gasket include the presence of white smoke in the exhaust (a sign of burned coolant in the combustion chamber), bubbles in the expansion tank, loss of compression in one or more cylinders, or the appearance of oily emulsion in the cooling circuit. In outboard engines subjected to intensive use, it is recommended to inspect the head gasket each time the head is removed or before any episode of overheating, and replace it whenever significant engine overheating has occurred. Acting preventively at the first signs avoids larger breakdowns that can render the engine unusable in the middle of the journey.
