Piston rings are the sealing elements that separate the combustion chamber from the crankcase, ensuring the compression necessary for the proper operation of the outboard motor. This kit, with a 0.30 mm oversize, is designed for 175 HP outboard engines from Johnson and Evinrude, and allows for cylinder honing to restore fit tolerances following wear of the piston-cylinder assembly. Their function within the gas distribution and lubrication system is threefold: to maintain compression pressure in the chamber, control oil consumption, and prevent combustion gases from entering the crankcase. Wear or breakage of the rings causes a direct loss of compression, increased fuel consumption, and possible contamination of the lubricating oil, with the consequent risk of serious engine damage.

When should this part be replaced?

The most common symptoms of piston ring wear in outboard engines are: bluish smoke from the exhaust (indicating oil burning), noticeable loss of power and acceleration, difficulty reaching cruising RPM, and a compression reading per cylinder below the manufacturer’s reference values. It is recommended to check the condition of the rings every time the engine undergoes cylinder honing or when the compression in any cylinder drops significantly compared to the rest. Replacing the piston rings as a preventive measure during honing, rather than reusing the existing ones, avoids having to disassemble the block again after just a few hours of operation, resulting in considerable savings on labor costs.
