Description
Function and Technical Context
The capacitor is an essential component of the breaker-point ignition system in two-stroke outboard motors, where it operates in parallel with the distributor points to suppress the electrical arc that occurs at the moment of contact opening. By absorbing and releasing electrical charge in each cycle, it protects the points from premature wear and ensures that the spark generated by the ignition coil is clean and precise at the exact moment. A degraded capacitor causes irregular ignition, loss of power, starting failures, and accelerated wear of the breaker contacts, compromising overall engine performance. This reference, compatible with OMC part numbers 0580321 and 580321 and Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser 802352, is designed for direct integration into the ignition circuits of Johnson and Evinrude motors of the corresponding family.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of a faulty capacitor include difficult or impossible cold starting, rough idle operation, progressive loss of acceleration, and visible pitting on the contact surface of the points when inspecting the distributor. It is recommended to inspect the capacitor at each service intervention on the breaker-point ignition system—generally every season or every 100 operating hours—and replace it preventively whenever the points are renewed, since both components work in tandem. Replacing the capacitor preventively is a low-cost measure that prevents ignition failures at sea and extends the service life of the contact assembly.
