The crankshaft tail or sleeve is an essential component in the sealing system of the outboard engine, located at the rear of the engine block where the transmission is coupled. Its main function is to seal the crankshaft cavity to prevent the entry of seawater and contaminants that would compromise internal lubrication and cause accelerated corrosion of the bearings and working surfaces. This dynamic and static seal is critical on vessels operating in salt water, where hydrostatic pressure and continuous exposure to the marine environment accelerate elastomer wear. A failure in this component allows water to enter the interior of the engine, which causes oxidation of internal surfaces, loss of viscosity of the lubricating oil and, in serious cases, seizure of the crankshaft and engine stoppage.

When to replace this part?

The crankshaft tailstock should be inspected annually, especially before the intensive boating season, and replaced when signs of oil exudation around the coupling flange, presence of crystallized salt deposits in the seal area, or water receipts in the lower crankcase after periods of prolonged boating are observed. It is recommended to replace this component preventively every 5-7 years of regular use or after 1,000-1,500 hours of operation, even without visible symptoms, since the elastomer loses elasticity due to UV exposure and temperature changes. Anticipating breakage prevents emergency repairs at sea and protects the engine block from irreversible internal damage that multiplies intervention costs.
