The 97077M ignition coil is the component responsible for generating the voltage necessary to produce the ignition spark in the cylinders of the marine engine. Integrated into the ignition system, it transforms the low voltage current coming from the magneto into high voltage pulses that jump between the electrodes of the spark plugs. Its correct operation is critical for the efficient combustion of the air-fuel mixture in each engine cycle, directly affecting available power, acceleration and fuel consumption. A failure in this coil causes intermittent misfires, severe loss of power, difficulty starting and, in advanced cases, complete engine shutdown.

When to replace this part?

Ignition coils show progressive wear after thousands of hours of operation, especially in saline environments where corrosion accelerates the internal degradation of the insulation. Typical symptoms include hesitant ignition, rough idling, difficulty starting when cold, and progressive loss of power that worsens under sustained effort or acceleration. Although there is no fixed maintenance interval, it is recommended to check the condition of the coil every two sailing seasons or after 500-800 hours of operation, and replace it preventively if ignition anomalies are detected. Replacing the coil preventively before it produces a complete failure avoids running out of propulsion power at sea and prolongs the life of spark plugs and other ignition system components.
