The boathook head is the functional metal component located at the end of the shaft, which allows docking, undocking and assistance maneuvers in the water to be carried out effectively and safely. It is part of the essential deck equipment on any recreational or professional vessel, integrating into port management operations along with ropes, fenders and mooring hooks. Its geometry combines hook and tip, which allows it to be hooked to bollards, rings and ladders and to push the hull against the pontoon without damaging the deadwork. A boat hook head in poor condition compromises the safety of docking maneuvers, and may cause hits to the hull, falls of crew members or loss of control of the boat in current or wind situations.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the gaff head needs to be replaced are: visible deformation of the hook or tip that prevents secure attachment to rings and cleats, advanced corrosion that weakens the metal structure, reducing its mechanical resistance, and breakage or cracking in the area where it connects to the shaft that can cause detachments during maneuvers. It is recommended to check the condition of the boat hook head at the beginning of each nautical season, paying special attention to the connection with the pole and the surface condition of the metal. Preventively replacing a damaged head prevents a docking maneuver in adverse conditions from becoming an incident with damage to the hull or risk to the crew.
