Description

Function and technical context

The Champion XC12PEPB spark plug is part of the outboard engine ignition system, being responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Its correct operation directly determines the energy efficiency of the engine, as a weak or irregular spark causes incomplete combustion that results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and elevated emissions. Given its position inside the cylinder, it operates under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure in each ignition cycle, making it a wear component subject to mandatory periodic inspection. A degraded spark plug can lead to starting failures, engine misfires at different speeds or even render the affected cylinder inoperable, compromising safe navigation.

When to replace this component?

The most frequent symptoms of a worn spark plug are difficult starting or requiring numerous attempts, engine misfires or jerking at low or medium rpm, visibly increased fuel consumption and the presence of black smoke or excessive exhaust emissions. In outboard engines it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs every 100 operating hours or at the start of each boating season, and proceed with complete replacement every 200-300 hours or as indicated in the engine manual. Replacing spark plugs preventively before a long voyage is the most economical measure to avoid a breakdown at sea and the costs of towage assistance involved.
