Description

Function and Technical Context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of the outboard or inboard engine. It operates within the ignition system, withstanding continuous cycles of high voltage, extreme temperature and pressure, being a consumable wear element of primary importance. A faulty spark plug causes ignition failure, incomplete combustion and notable loss of power, potentially resulting in excessive fuel consumption, irregular engine vibrations and starting difficulties. The Champion RA8HC (CHARA8HC) reference is manufactured to maintain clean and efficient ignition in four-stroke marine engines from brands such as Yamaha and Mercury, where ignition reliability is critical for vessel safety.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or faulty spark plug in marine engines include difficult or erratic starting, jerking and loss of torque at low RPM, unstable idle and increased fuel consumption with no apparent cause. In four-stroke marine engines it is recommended to inspect and replace spark plugs every 100 operating hours or at the start of each boating season, following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Changing spark plugs preventatively is one of the most economical marine maintenance interventions and prevents unexpected breakdowns at sea that can be very costly.
