The Champion L78C spark plug is part of the ignition system of outboard and stationary petrol engines, being responsible for generating the electric spark that initiates the combustion of the air-fuel mixture in the explosion chamber. Its correct operation directly determines the efficiency of the ignition cycle: a spark plug in good condition guarantees complete combustion, optimizing fuel consumption and the engine's response to different operating regimes. If the spark plug has wear on the electrode, carbon deposits or cracks in the insulator, the ignition becomes irregular or fails completely, preventing starting or causing power loss during navigation. When to replace this part?

For frequently used marine engines, it is recommended that the spark plugs be checked and replaced as part of seasonal maintenance or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plugs preventively, without waiting for an obvious failure to appear, is the practice most recommended by naval mechanics: an ignition failure at sea can leave the boat without propulsion at the worst possible moment.
