Function and Technical Context
The CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) is the control unit of the electronic ignition system in Johnson outboard engines of 60 and 70 HP, 2-stroke, manufactured between 1994 and 2001. Its purpose is to generate and synchronize high-voltage discharges that activate the spark plugs at the precise moment of the combustion cycle, ensuring a clean and efficient spark in each cylinder. A faulty CDI module causes irregular combustion or complete loss of ignition, resulting in difficult starts, unstable idle operation, jerking under load, or complete engine shutdown. As the electronic brain of the ignition system, its correct operation is crucial for engine performance, fuel consumption, and reliability during navigation. This unit replaces OMC references 0584808, 0585145, 0763803, 0777655, 5004532, 5004533, 584808, 585145, 585189, and 763803, and is the direct replacement for reference 0585145 according to the BRP EPC catalog.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of a faulty CDI module include intermittent ignition misfires (especially in cold conditions or when reaching operating temperature), sudden loss of power, engine stalling under load, and starting difficulty or inability to start. As an electronic component subjected to constant vibration, moisture, and heat, it should be inspected during each seasonal maintenance and replaced at the first sign of failure, as deficient ignition can lead to damage to the coil, stator, or cylinders themselves. Replacing the CDI preventively upon detecting the first symptoms avoids being stranded at sea and costly secondary repairs to the ignition system.
